Eye doctor near Aliso Viejo, CA 92656 helps patients see clearer with Lasik refractive surgery

The eyes have been called the “window to the soul” and have a profound impact on the way that you interpret and react to the world around you. The smile of a loved one, a scenic landscape, a beautiful sunrise – these may all be life-enhancing visions.

For many people, certain conditions may affect their ability to see clearly, such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness. These vision issues occur due to the shape of the cornea and its ability to focus light directly onto the retina. They are referred to as refractive errors. Symptoms of these disorders may be headaches, eyestrain, squinting, or feeling tired when driving.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the eye is not perfectly round. Most people experience some level of the condition. When light enters the eye, it should bend – refract – and cause images to focus on the retina. Astigmatism causes the image to be directed off target, making objects, near or far, seem wavy and blurry.

Nearsighted

Nearsightedness, also called myopia, is a common eye disorder that causes blurriness when viewing objects at a distance. The condition is often genetic and may appear in childhood and worsen with age. Nearsightedness is a result of the cornea curvature or the length of the eyeball. As light enters the eye, objects appear to the front of the retina, where there is greater sensitivity to brightness, and blur.

Farsighted

As the name implies, farsightedness, or hyperopia, is a disorder in which the eye sees distant objects more clearly than those up close. Children can often compensate in mild forms of the condition because their eye muscle and lens adjust. As patients age, farsightedness may eventually limit vision at a distance as well. Just as with nearsightedness, this occurs because of the way that light enters the eye. In farsightedness, the eye may not be long enough, or focus may be too weak, causing the cornea and the lens of the eye to direct the image behind the retina.

These eye disorders can often be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery
