How clearly we see objects at various distances are dependent on the inner workings of the eye.

Visualization actually comes from the bending of light rays. As light rays enter the eye, the lens and the cornea both play a role in directing them towards the retina, where they will be transmitted to the brain for recognition.

The eyes are complex organs that require a great deal of collaboration for vision to be clear. This includes the shape of the cornea. In the instance that the cornea is misshapen, even slightly, the way in which light falls on the retina will be altered. This is referred to as a refractive error. A number of vision problems fall into the category of refractive errors. These include nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

Refractive surgery, performed in our eye center near Aliso Viejo, is designed to reshape the cornea. This type of procedure is now typically aided by laser technology, and is effective at reducing or ending a person’s reliance on vision-correction with glasses or contact lenses. As medical technology has improved, so have the various refractive procedures.

LASIK refractive surgery

Many patients of The Orange County Eye Institute experience optimal vision correction with LASIK surgery. This procedure is safe and effective at treating three refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. In such conditions, the dome-shape of the cornea is altered. It may be either too short or too long, or may be curved in such a way that light rays do not precisely hit the retina.

LASIK is performed more often than most other refractive surgical procedures. Patients appreciate having the ability to correct vision and minimize dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses in a quick, efficient procedure with little downtime. After treatment, which is quite comfortable, patients may treat any post-operative discomfort with over-the-counter pain relieving medication. If discomfort does occur, it usually resolves within 24 hours. Eye drops are typically also prescribed for use during the first week following surgery.
