Chances are you have heard of LASIK, but do you know what it is? LASIK surgery is used to correct vision for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It works by altering the shape of the cornea, allowing light to be correctly focused on the retina. The result is clearer vision.

The LASIK procedure itself is quick, usually less than 15 minutes on both eyes. Patients will notice an improvement in vision with corrective eyewear in about a day.

During the procedure, the eye surgeon makes a fold in the cornea and pulls it back to remove some tissue with a specialized laser. This laser utilizes UV light to reform the cornea to allow light to focus accurately on the retina. For patients with myopia (nearsightedness), the cornea is flattened. For patients with hyperopia (farsightedness) the cornea is steepened. For patients with astigmatism, the laser reshapes the cornea into a more regular shape.

Once this process is complete, the flap is put back into place and the cornea is left to heal. The procedure is done under topical anesthetic and it does not require stitches.

Before undergoing the LASIK procedure, candidates will have a thorough examination. This includes evaluation of the shape of your cornea, your vision, and any additional eye conditions. Your surgeon will also look at the moistness of the eyes and will measure the curvature of your eye. This measurement allows the surgeon to create a map of the cornea for surgery. Patients will need to have eyes that are in healthy condition and will need to stop wearing contact lenses for approximately two weeks prior to the procedure.

Recovery from LASIK may include blurry or hazy vision for about a day. Patients will need to arrange for transportation home from surgery. For many, vision improvement will be immediate, while others may need to wait for several weeks. It is advised to allow a couple of days for rest after the surgery.

Long-term results from LASIK can include 20/20 or better vision. Some people may still require glasses after the surgery, but the prescription will usually be markedly lower.
