Eye conditions can be difficult to understand. Dr. Salib is an experienced eye specialist who provides in depth information so that patients can gain the most benefit of recommended treatment. People scheduled for cataract surgery often ask their surgeons if treatment will also correct astigmatism. Dr. Salib of Lake Forest explains.

Cataracts and astigmatism – two different problems

Cataract surgery is a procedure performed to remove a lens that has become opaque or clouded. This condition may result from excessive exposure to sunlight, with damage accumulating over many years. As it is a progressive condition, a cataract may eventually need to be removed as daily life is impacted by blurred or distorted vision.

Astigmatism is blurred vision due to the shape of the lens and not opacity. The eyes should be shaped round, like a ball. When shaped more oblong than spherical, it can become difficult to see clearly. Typically, this condition can be treated with eyeglasses. With careful planning, your eye doctor can address astigmatism at the same time a cataract is removed.

Cataract surgery includes the removal of an affected lens, followed by the insertion of a prescribed intraocular lens. If a standard lens were inserted for a patient with astigmatism, this person would still require eyeglasses after surgery. To correct astigmatism, Dr. Salib uses a premium intraocular lens to replace the natural lens, which is shaped with precision to accommodate the oblong shape of the eye, and is capable of improving near vision, far vision, or both, based on the unique needs of the patient.
