Due to the many advances in technology over the past few decades, we have seen an enormous shift in how we perform daily tasks and how we live in general. Today, people of all ages can be seen gazing into a smartphone or other handheld device, computer screen, or video game for hours on end. While some admonish that computer habits will cause permanent damage to the eyes, this typically isn’t the case. It is possible, however, for the eyes to become extremely irritated under the strain of electronics use. Dr. George Salib often discusses with his patients how to manage eye care as it relates to technology. In the typical setting, while working around the house or just going through our day, we blink approximately 18 times a minute. The rate we blink changes significantly when we use technology such as our computer or handheld device, decreasing by about 50 percent. We may strain our eyes, as well, when we spend a great deal of time performing “near” work or writing and reading. Several habits can help to protect eyes from undue strain: Dr. George Salib provides outstanding eye care to residents all around Orange County.
