What to expect from cataract surgery

The surgical procedure for cataract removal takes only a few minutes, with your experienced eye doctor carefully removing the damaged part of the eye’s lens and replacing it with the appropriate lens. This type of eye surgery is very safe. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed eye procedures each year. Following treatment, you are able to return home right away, recovering with post-operative instructions provided by your doctor.

Patients typically go home wearing some type of shield over the treated eye. When this shield is removed, vision may seem a bit blurry, cloudy, or otherwise distorted. This does not mean that your surgery was not successful. The eye will need time to adjust to the change in lens, becoming accustomed to the new intraocular lens gradually. If vision seems wavy, rest assured that this should last only about an hour.

Every person is different, and will experience a return to their best vision in their own time. While many people report clear vision within just a few hours of treatment, others need a week or two to see with clarity.

Eyes may seem bloodshot after cataract surgery, due to the impact of surgery on the blood vessels on the surface of the eye. Over several days, blood vessels will heal and the white of the eye will return to normal. Depending on how your doctor administers local anesthesia before cataract surgery, temporary bruising may occur under the eye.

Dr. Salib is an experienced eye specialist who follows up with patients after cataract surgery to make sure the eye is healing properly. Our patients are also encouraged to contact our office with any questions they have about recovery, or to report any concerns over symptoms. Within a month after treatment, the eye should be completely healed and vision improved. The Orange County Eye Institute can help you handle your vision care needs. Contact us for your visit today.
