Speaker 1: Hi. My name’s Dr. George Salib from the Orange County Eye Institute. We see a lot of patients with dry eye and are passionate about helping them reduce the burden of the disease.
Speaker 2: 44 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease, common symptoms or feeling of grittiness, fluctuating or blurry vision, or even just general eye tiredness. Often patients aren’t even aware that it’s dry eye that may be causing their ocular discomfort or poor or blurry vision. In our practice, we have state-of-the-art techniques to diagnose dry eye. By using our specialized equipment, we can determine whether you have dry eye and the best course of treatment to have you feeling better and seeing better in no time. Your tear film is actually three layers of liquid, the mucus layer, a water layer, and an oil layer, and together they’re responsible for protecting and keeping your eye comfortable, as well as providing clear vision by creating a smooth ocular surface. The most common form of dry eye is meibomian gland disease, commonly referred to as MGD. This is where the body fails to produce or produces a poor quality of meibom. The oil layer. When oil isn’t present, the other layers of the tear evaporate and cause discomfort or poor vision. MGD also causes the glands that produce oil to become clogged and the oil hardens inside the glands. If we don’t heat and remove that hardened stagnant oil, the glands shorten and die off and cannot be repaired, creating more problems.
Speaker 1: A technology that we use to treat dry eye and MGD is called tear care.
Speaker 2: During the course of an appointment, we will heat the hardened oils. Once softened, we will remove the oils. This allows the body to produce new vital oils that may make your eyes more comfortable and may make your vision more consistent.
Speaker 2: We will apply the smart lids and then activate the 15 minutes of comfortable yet therapeutic heat. During this time, you can feel free to read, check emails, watch TV, or just relax as the oils are being softened. After 15 minutes of heating the hardened oils, we will remove the smart lids, and your doctor now removes the softened Doyles with a specialized tool. After your tear care treatment, we will provide you with care instructions and see you back in a few weeks to check your progress. Clinical studies have shown tear care to be effective in as little as a few weeks, and that effect may last for almost a year.
Speaker 1: If you think tear care might be right for you. Contact our office today to schedule a dry eye appointment.
