Botox treatment from Doctor in Laguna Hills, CA

The aging process combined with overworked facial muscles can lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Many patients don't want the wrinkles, but they don't want to look frozen or unnatural either. As a commonly requested cosmetic procedure for the face, Botox is used to address lines and wrinkles. With a precisely performed Botox treatment, Dr. Erb at Orange County Eye Institute in Laguna Hills, CA can address unwanted lines and wrinkles to decrease the signs of aging without changing the look or movement of the face.

What is Botox?

Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, is a FDA-approved neuromodulator. It is used to safely and effectively relax the muscles and decrease movement. Once injected, Botox relaxes the muscle tissue preventing it from responding to nerve impulses that control muscle contraction. It is approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and crow's feet. Botox has a record of experience that physicians and patients know and trust.

Lines and wrinkles are a result of a number of factors including age, reduced collagen, environmental factors, and facial expressions. Being expressive is part of everyday communication. We smile, frown, and speak. The repeated contraction of facial muscles can lead to lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging. Botox targets the underlying causes of lines and wrinkles – the repeated muscle contractions from making facial expressions. Botox works to temporarily reduce muscle activity thus smoothing the skin and minimizing the appearance of lines in adult men and women.

Botox can be used to treat the following areas:
  • Crow's feet on the outside corners of the eyes
  • The “11's” or the lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Neck lines
  • Small lines around the lips
Botox is injected using a tiny, sterile needle. Several small injections are needed. Small amounts of Botox are injected into the muscles of the face to temporarily block contractions, relax the muscles, and minimize lines and wrinkles. Over the period of a few months, the treatment begins to wear off and the lines gradually reappear. Regular injections keep men and women looking youthful and rejuvenated.

What to expect from Botox treatment

Botox is successful for both men and women. Some patients start preventative treatments as early as their twenties in hopes of avoiding deeper wrinkles. Others start later when wrinkles have fully developed. There is no right age. Botox still works to relax the muscles and smooth wrinkles.

Patients need to be honest and realistic about cosmetic treatment expectations. During a Botox appointment, a patient's medical history, experience with Botox, and expectations for the treatment will be discussed. Patients may be asked to make expressions such as squinting, smiling, or frowning. This shows the location and depth of the wrinkles. The physician uses the patient's history and expectations to determine the number of units needed.

Botox treatments take as little as 10-20 minutes and are easily tolerated. Patients describe the treatment as quick, tiny pinpricks. For the crow's feet, three injections are needed in the muscle that frames each eye. For frown lines, physicians inject five areas along the lower part of the forehead.

Patients can leave the office with little evidence of a treatment. Side effects are generally mild. The most common effects include redness and possible bruising at the injection site. There is no downtime or recovery period with Botox treatments. Doctors may advise patients to stay upright for 2-4 hours after their appointments. It is possible for Botox to migrate to other areas of the face. To ensure proper placement, doctors recommend avoiding physical activity for a few hours following a Botox treatment.

Over the course of a couple days, the lines and wrinkles begin to fade. Full effects are usually visible within a week and last for three to six months. The skin will appear smoother and more youthful, but not frozen. Patients still look natural and will be able to make expressions.
