Photorefractive keratectomy

“Refraction” describes the way the cornea of your eye bends light, allowing you to focus clearly. Refractive surgery corrects a problem with that process, reducing or eliminating dependency on eyeglasses and contact lenses.

The procedure involves removal of the epithelium, the thin outer layer of the cornea. Then, underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using a laser. The eye heals faster than any other part of the body, so epithelium regeneration takes only a few days.

Why PRK?

PRK was the first eye surgery for vision correction using laser technology. It is appropriate for:

Nearsightedness (myopia)
Farsightedness (hyperopia)
Astigmatism – A refractive error that causes multiple points of focus in front of the retina, behind it, or both.

This technique was the precursor to LASIK, which is now extremely popular. There is a slightly longer healing period with PRK. However, it is the better choice in some situations.

Stroma is a supportive layer of the cornea. LASIK surgery requires a corneal flap, turning back epithelial and stromal tissues. With PRK, stroma remains in place. Dr. Salib can access the entire thickness of it for finesse in vision correction.

Patients who have thin corneas or have had a previous LASIK surgery may not be current candidates for LASIK due to risk of flap complications. PRK helps these individuals regain clear vision.
