What to expect with Laguna Hills laser eye treatment

Today there are various conditions that we are able to treat successfully with the use of laser technology, often leading patients to experience better vision without the need for glasses or contacts. For many people, the idea of having surgery on the eyes causes some anxiety. Knowing what to expect before, during, and after your Laguna Hills laser eye treatment will help you feel confident that your comfort will not be affected.

In preparation for eye surgery, patients are given specific pre-operative instructions to follow. This may include halting the use of perfume and lotion in the few days before surgery. This recommendation comes to eliminate substances around the eye that may pose a risk of infection. Patients should also arrange for a friend or loved one to drive to and from our office on the day of surgery.

Perhaps the most fortunate benefit of laser surgery versus traditional surgical procedures is the time frame in which treatment can be completed. When you visit us for an evaluation in Laguna Hills for laser eye treatment, your procedure can be scheduled and will last only a few minutes. Before beginning surgery, Dr. Salib places anesthetic into the eyes, which completely numbs the area. You will feel no pain while laser surgery is taking place. The eyes are held open with an eye speculum, and you will be asked to focus on one object, like a light inside the machine, for instance.

Following Laguna Hills laser eye treatment, relief from any discomfort can be easily achieved with over the counter pain relievers, or a mild prescription medication. Although some patients experience slight discomfort, as though something were in their eye, vision improvement is usually immediately noticeable. Because the eyes can be sensitive to light, or visual disturbances such as halos or starbursts may occur, it is beneficial to take the day of surgery off and rest in a quiet location.

Within two weeks of surgery, patients return to our office for a follow-up visit. Between the time of surgery and follow up, it is recommended to avoid:

  • Contact sports
  • Strenuous activities
  • Use of cosmetics around the eyes
  • Swimming or sitting in a Jacuzzi
  • Driving at night, as you may experience glare
