Early detection key to optimal treatment results

Each year, millions of people are silently affected by glaucoma, a condition of the eye in which pressure builds up and damages the optic nerve. This condition, of which there are several types, is quite serious due to the fact that it causes no symptoms of pain, and may cause little to no real issues with vision until the nerve has become irreparably damaged.

Because glaucoma has no symptoms, and may result in permanent loss of vision, it is important to have your eyes regularly checked by an eye specialist. This is especially true for those who have a family history of the condition. We recommend having your eyes checked at least once every year, to include assessment of intraocular pressure (pressure that forms inside the eye). People with diabetes or a family history of glaucoma will need to schedule visits more frequently, as advised by his or her physician. Through early detection, treatment may begin in order to preserve vision. If, between visits, symptoms such as the following occur, contact your eye specialist for evaluation.
  • Vision loss, especially peripheral vision (tunnel vision)
  • Haziness of the eyeball itself
  • Persistent redness of the eye
  • Pain in or behind the eye
  • The appearance of halos around sources of light
To check for glaucoma, Dr. Salib will perform tests and may take specialized pictures of the optic nerve, if necessary, while the patient's eyes are dilated. Drops to numb the eyes are also administered when necessary in order to facilitate a comfortable process for the patient. Using special tools, eye pressure is measured and recorded. Using the findings of tests performed, the doctor can determine if glaucoma is present, and can then discuss the most suitable form of treatment.

Fortunately, there are excellent treatment options available to treat this condition. Our California glaucoma treatment is determined based on the patient's particular situation and the severity of the disease. In mild cases, eye drops may be prescribed to minimize pressure in the eyes. In some cases of glaucoma, laser surgery may be needed to reduce pressure and preserve vision.

To avoid complications from glaucoma, be sure to visit your eye specialist for regular evaluation. To schedule your personalized eye examination, contact the Orange County Eye Institute today.
