Experienced ophthalmologist near Mission Viejo discusses eyestrain and computer usage

Due to the many advances in technology over the past few decades, we have seen an enormous shift in how we perform daily tasks and how we live in general. Today, people of all ages can be seen gazing into a smartphone or other handheld device, computer screen, or video game for hours on end. While some admonish that computer habits will cause permanent damage to the eyes, this typically isn't the case. It is possible, however, for the eyes to become extremely irritated under the strain of electronics use. Dr. George Salib often discusses with his patients how to manage eye care as it relates to technology.

How eyestrain occurs in front of the computer

In the typical setting, while working around the house or just going through our day, we blink approximately 18 times a minute. The rate we blink changes significantly when we use technology such as our computer or handheld device, decreasing by about 50 percent. We may strain our eyes, as well, when we spend a great deal of time performing "near" work or writing and reading.

How to decrease eyestrain without giving up your electronic devices

Several habits can help to protect eyes from undue strain:
  • Do not sit in front of a game or computer screen for too long without taking a break. A good rule is to look away from the computer screen, finding an object about twenty feet in the distance on which to focus for about twenty seconds. While this is a good habit, it is also very beneficial to actually get up from your work at least once an hour and walk to another room, looking at objects at various distances to give your eyes a break.
  • When doing computer work, position your face at least 25 inches away from the screen or monitor. Also, check the position of your screen to ensure that it allows you to maintain a slight downward gaze as you work.
  • Remember to blink frequently to avoid dry eyes. Post a visual reminder on your computer if you must.
  • Keep artificial tears handy for times when your eyes become dry and irritated.
  • Get plenty of sleep each night so as not to exacerbate eyestrain.
