Crystalens

Crystalens IOL ideal for many of our Laguna Hills patients

The development of a cataract can be a distressing event. Cataracts are not overly concerning in terms of overall eye health though the progression of clouding on the lens may eventually need to be addressed. At Orange County Eye Institute, we provide the quality of care through which your mind can be put to ease. On your schedule, we can arrange for the removal of cataracts to restore your vision and your quality of life.

What is a cataract?

Some people consider cataracts to be some type of growth on the eye. In actuality, a cataract is simply the stiffening and hardening of the natural lens. These changes to the lens make it difficult to focus. Vision may become cloudy and it may become increasingly difficult to accurately visualize various colors or to see at night. Some patients become sensitive to light as cataracts progress. The condition often affects men and women over age 65 with the risk increasing with age. Fortunately, there are options for cataract removal.

Cataract surgery for improved vision

More than three million cataract removal procedures are performed each year. Cataract removal surgery focuses on the root cause; the eye’s natural lens. Removing the clouded lens makes a lot more sense than having to continually modify lifestyle choices due to poor vision. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. It is efficient and extremely safe and, most importantly, capable of restoring vision at all distances through the selection of an appropriate intraocular lens, or IOL.

What is an intra-ocular lens (IOL)

The IOL is the lens that will be inserted into the same capsule that held the natural lens. There are numerous types of intraocular lenses available today. The monofocal lens, which is suitable in a number of cases, is a fixed prosthesis that does not accommodate the eye’s natural movements. For patients who prefer an IOL that will move with their eye, the accommodating Crystalens IOL may be ideal. During the consultation in our Laguna Hills practice, patients learn about the options that may best suit their needs.

Crystalens is an IOL that is stabilized in the eye with two microscopic hinges that are neither felt nor seen. With the ability to flex around the eyes natural movements in response to light, this lens produces an outstanding vision that is typically very clear and sharp.

If you have noticed changes to your vision due to cataracts, we can help. Patients from Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, CA and numerous other surrounding cities find the solutions they can trust with our experienced team.
