Types and benefits of cosmetic eye surgery explained by an oculoplastic surgeon

Drooping eyelids, bags and puffiness under the eyes, sunken eyes, and drooping eyebrows can all have a negative impact on your facial appearance, making you look older than you really are. Still, perhaps, more importantly, some of these issues can start to cause problems with your vision, reducing your ability to see clearly. At Orange County Eye Institute in Laguna Hills, California, our oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Melanie Erb is highly skilled and experienced in working with patients to achieve the aesthetic results they seek while also ensuring they have the best visual outcomes possible.

The benefits of cosmetic surgery go beyond a refreshed appearance

Even though cosmetic eye surgery only physically impacts a small portion of your face, the effects on your overall appearance can be remarkable. In addition to reducing puffiness, sagging, or drooping skin, cosmetic eye surgery can also contribute to a:

  • Smoother forehead because you no longer need to raise your eyebrows to get a better view of the world
  • Less angry/concerned appearance
  • Brighter appearance in your eyes since light is better able to reflect off of your irises
  • More youthful eye shape

While the benefits of improved self-confidence and a revitalized appearance are incredibly important, our top priority is ensuring that our patients have healthy eyes and clear vision – and cosmetic eye surgery can help with that as well! Heaving, drooping skin, or puffiness around the eyes can impede your vision and affect the way you experience your day-to-day life. When these issues are treated, your field of vision will increase. Some patients can also experience improvements in migraines after blepharoplasty.

Types of cosmetic eye surgery

At Orange County Eye Institute, we offer several different eyelid surgery options to meet a wide variety of patient needs. Based on a consultation with Dr. Melanie Erb, she may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Upper blepharoplasty for excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids
  • Lower blepharoplasty for lower eyelid bags and dark circles under the eyes
  • Eyelid ptosis surgery for droopy eyelids
  • Eyebrow lift to reduce sagging skin in the forehead
  • Tear trough treatment using hyaluronic acid fillers to reduce the appearance of sunken eyes
  • Almond eye surgery to alter the shape of the eyes to be more aesthetically pleasing
  • Canthoplasty surgery to address fallen eyelids, very round eyes, or bags under the eyes
  • Epicanthoplasty, which removes most of the epicanthal fold (the fold of skin covering the inner corner of the eye), which can become heavy in people of Asian descent
  • Asian blepharoplasty to reshape the skin around the eye and create an upper eyelid crease in people of Asian descent; this can be combined with epicanthoplasty
  • Midface lift and cheek augmentation to lift sagging skin and reduce the appearance of lower eye sockets

Additionally, we offer revisional surgeries for patients who have had previous eyelid or ptosis surgery and are unhappy with the results or for whom the results have faded due to natural aging processes. Dr. Erb works closely with you to understand your concerns and provide results tailored to your specific needs and preferences.
