Might diet help you put off the need for Crystalens treatment in Laguna Hills?

One of the leading causes of blindness today is the age-related cataract. Though “blindness” sounds very harsh and permanent, in the case of the cataract, vision can be restored by removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with what is called an intraocular lens, or IOL. Patients of Dr. George Salib receive outstanding care when cataract removal is needed, with options like the Crystalens accommodating IOL in our Laguna Hills office. At the same time, nothing would make us happier than seeing our patients enjoy optimal vision.

Scientists have yet to determine a direct cause for cataracts. What has been determined is that cataracts seem to be associated with oxidative stress and the damage of natural proteins and enzymes found in the eye. The problem of cataracts tends to begin in mid-life. By the time one reaches the age of 65, he or she is likely to have clouded, sensitive vision due to cataracts.

Oxidative stress and the link between cataracts and diet

Though no conclusive studies have proven without a doubt that diet can prevent cataracts, the fact that this eye problem is linked to oxidative stress prompts one to at least pose the question.

What is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress is a process that occurs in the body when imbalance occurs between antioxidants and free radicals living in the body. These atoms or molecules (groups of atoms) have no electron to cling to. As such, they react strongly with other, paired atoms and molecules. Free radicals are typically unstable oxygen molecules that require an electron in order to stabilize. As they roam the body, free radicals attempt to steal electrons from other structures. It is this stealing that is oxidation.

Oxidation affects the eye when the fats and proteins in the lens are depleted and the lens becomes cloudy. Following the chain of events, one can see that a healthy diet rich in antioxidants can only improve the balance between free radicals and antioxidants, potentially slowing down the oxidative process and preserving the natural state of the eye.
