Your eye doctor in the Laguna Beach area can help you handle cataracts

Cataracts are an adverse eye condition that is initially quite undetectable. In their earliest stages, cataracts may produce some blurry vision, as though a thin film is being looked through. Light may also become somewhat irritating, seeming glaringly bright, or colors may appear dull compared to how they were once visualized.

The visual symptoms experienced are largely related to the type of cataract that has developed.

  • A subcapsular cataract develops near the back of the lens. These types of cataracts are most common in diabetics or individuals who consume large doses of steroidal medication.
  • A nuclear cataract, which tends to be associated with aging, will be found within the lens’s nucleus. This type of cataract sometimes triggers improved near vision, a phenomenon known as “second sight.”
  • A cortical cataract appears as opaque, wedge-shaped, light-colored spots near the outer edges of the lens. These opacities spread inward toward the center of the lens.

Vision impaired by developing cataracts may be improved with specifically prescribed eyeglasses and appropriate lighting. However, as cataracts worsen, these corrections may lose their effectiveness. At this point, a suitable solution for cataracts would be surgical removal. In the United States, cataract surgery is the most commonly performed eye surgery, helping 9 out of 10 people regain optimal vision.

Cataract surgery is precise and effective. During this procedure, the affected lens is removed and replaced with a suitable intraocular lens, or IOL. This clear, plastic lens is designed based on the findings of a thorough pre-operative consultation. Shaped to attain each patient’s own normal vision, a customized IOL should produce vision between 20/20 and 20/40.

Undergoing cataract surgery in our outpatient surgical center is a smooth process. Following surgery, our patients are sent home wearing an eye patch, which should stay in place for a day or two. Healing occurs gradually over a period of a week to two weeks, during which time it is possible to return to work, though areas with a lot of dust should be avoided.

Cataracts do not pose serious risk to eyesight. However, they can impair vision to the degree where daily activities are impeded. You do not have to accept vision that limits your enjoyment in life. Contact your eye doctor in the Laguna Beach area for personalized cataract treatment.
