Your Laguna Hills doctor explains recovering from cataract surgery

At Orange County Eye Institute, we perform numerous cataract removal procedures every year. Our patients are surprised about feeling so good so quickly after their procedures. Often, they are back to their normal activities the day after cataract removal.

Recovery: it’s important to take it slow

We understand how liberating it is to have your vision restored by cataract surgery. However, we encourage you to take precautions to protect your eyes and encourage optimal healing. Most measures that we recommend need only be followed for a week to 10 days, and they minimize the risk of injury or infection during your recovery.

It is often necessary to use eye drops after cataract surgery to minimize inflammation or to prevent infection, or both. Eye drops will need to be applied throughout the day over the course of 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. This routine is important to optimize the healing process. We encourage patients to contact our office if they have any questions about their recovery or symptoms they may be experiencing.

Additional steps to optimal healing
  1. Do not drive the day of your cataract surgery.
  2. Postpone strenuous activity, including heavy lifting, for at least one week.
  3. Remain upright after cataract surgery. Bending over causes intraocular pressure to increase.
  4. Try to avoid sneezing for several hours after surgery.
  5. Move slowly during the first 24-48 hours after surgery. You don’t want to bump into anything.
  6. Do not use a hot tub or go swimming for at least two weeks after surgery. Bacteria in water may cause infection.
  7. Wear sunglasses or protective lenses to keep wind, dust, and other debris from floating into your eyes. Maintain this habit for a few weeks after your procedure.
  8. Avoid rubbing your eyes.

After cataract surgery, you may bathe or shower normally, and watch television or use the computer for short periods of time. However, limiting these activities for a short time will reduce strain on your eyes and facilitate faster healing.
